Notes (1st edition)One of Hasui's most famous and favorite prints from his Fuji Series - this one entitled "Evening at Tago-No-Ura". It is a lovely early evening scene of a farmer slowly wending his way to his barn with a full wagon load of hay on a horse drawn cart. The farmer is seen silhouetted between a stand of tall pine trees - with the always magnificent Mount Fuji in the distance lighted by the late afternoon sun. This print, made originally in 1940, was published by Watanabe - who is best known for publishing the majority of Hasui's prints.

Up for auction is a very nice Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). Hasui was one of the most prolific and talented artists of the shin hanga period during the early 20th century. He was best known for his exquisite landscape prints. Hasui is considered to be one of the three greatest Japanese woodblock print artists of all time. In 1953, the Japanese government honored Hasui and his art work as a National Living Treasure.

The title of this particular print is "Tago no ura no yube", which translates to "Evening at Tagonoura". It's from the series "Selected Views of the Tokaido Road". The image depicts an early evening scene of a farmer and a horse-drawn cart full of hay silhouetted between a stand of tall pine trees and a magnificent view of Mount Fuji lit by the late afternoon sun. Hasui's signature and a red square seal attributed to Kasamatsu Shiro appear within the image in the lower right corner. The print is titled and dated in kanji in the left margin.

This print was first published in 1940. I believe this example is a very early edition, as it has the square Shiro seal and is missing the normally-found 6mm Watanabe seal (Kasamatsu Shiro worked for Watanabe). I can't find any other examples of this print with the square Shiro seal (usually have the round "Sui" seal). Since this seal doesn't show up well in the photos, here is a link that shows what the seal on this print looks like:

The especially thick paper (see photo) and lack of block wear also suggest this is an older print. The image measures about 14 1/2" tall and 9 1/2" wide (vertical oban). The entire print (including margins) measures approximately 15 1/2" tall and 10 1/2" wide. The print has never been framed. I purchased this woodblock print at a recent estate sale, along with several others that I'm selling separately (see my other auctions).

Condition of this Hasui print is VERY GOOD. The colors are very bright and there is no visible toning or foxing. The print does have a few light creases from not being stored properly in its unframed state (will not be apparent when framed). The reverse side shows nice bleed through. The margins are also undamaged.

This is a 9 3/4" x 14", pencil signed woodblock print by the Japanese painter and printmaker Hasui Kawase, 1883 - 1957. This is pencil titled lower left Tagono-Ura. Pencil signed lower right. This has Watanabe's circular seal lower left. Fine condition.

Fantastic image woodblock by famous Japanese woodblock artist Kawase Hasui (1883 - 1957). The title of this print is "Evening At Tago Ura". Entire print measures 10 1/4" x 15 1/4", and the image measures 9 3/4" x 14 1/4", and has the 6mm Watanabe seal. STRONG COLOR print has not been laid down, has good margins, with no rips, creases, or staining. This print came from an estate collection that had a large portfolio/book of Japanese woodblock prints that were from the 1940's and 1950's, and early 1960's.

This is an original oban size, shin hanga Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui titled "Evening at Tagonoura", dated Showa 15 ( 1940), and sealed in the image by the artist. The print was published by Watanabe Shozaburo and bears the Watanabe 6mm seal which makes this print a lifetime edition (published during Hasui's lifetime). Fine impression, color and registration. No foxing, toning, folds or creases. The print is not setdown or trimmed. There is some very faint matburn on the verso of print where the back of the print came into contact with paper with an acid content. This does not affect the image. Paper size is 10.5" x 15.5".

This print is authentic, not restrike or reproduction. I guarantee it. This is an genuine original Japanese woodblock print by great shin-hanga artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) titled "Evening at Tagonoura ". The print is dated Showa 15(1940). Some prints by Hasui offered now on ebay are later editions of much less quality (sometimes from recarved blocks) This one is the first edition published by Watanabe in 1940, and bears appropriate Watanabe prewar “C” seal on the right margin. One from the best Hasui’s view of Mount Fuji. Great impression, good color and registration. Signed by artist Hasui, has seal “Sui” in the image and titled in kanji at the left margin. Top margin’s slightly trimmed. Oban size 15 1/4" x 10 1/4".
