Shin Hanga: The Reflective Girl Lot AU27 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Keigetsu Format: Oban tate-e: 17" x 11.5" Subject: From an untitled series of prints hand-printed by Nishimura Kumakichi in 1923 this charming study of a reflective young bijin leaning on a tobacco pipe ranks as one of the most delightful bijin designs of the Shin Hanga. This example is particularly fine and does not suffer from the usual black oxidation of the white gofun used for the girl's face and hands. Publisher: Blocks carved by: Yamagishi Kazue, Printed by: Nishimura Komakichi Date: c. 1923 Condition: Fine colors. Full size. Hand-applied bokashi for the whisps of hair on the girl's neck. A tiny edge damage in bottom right margin. Minor creases, marks and flaws. Generally fine state of preservation. Impression: Very fine impression with gauffrage and silver mica on the girl's Obi, tobacco pipe, under kimono and hair-tie. |
Koharu the Heroine by Kikuchi Keigetsu. Original woodblock print circa 1922. Very good condition. 17.0 x 11.3 inches. Nice color and ink bleedthrough. Silver mica on the obi adds to the details of the print. Compare to same print on page 94 of the book "The female image 20th century prints of Japanese beauties". |

Wednesday, 2 November 2005 Shin Hanga: Pensive Bijin Artist: Keigetsu Kikuchi Format: Large oban tate-e: 20" x 14.75" Subject: A portrait of the Heroine Koharu, deep in thought, holding her tobacco pipe, by the artist Keigetsu Kikuchi, 1879-1955, who was born in Nagano prefecture with the given name Kikuchi Kanji. He traveled in Europe during the twenties with two of his art colleagues. Back in Japan he became a teacher of Japanese print art at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and at the Kyoto City School of Painting. His favorite subjects were Bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. In 1934 he was honored by being appointed a member of the Imperial Art Board and in 1937 as a member of the Imperial Art Academy. Date: c.1923 Condition: Full size. This fine example is completely free of the usual darkening of the gofun used for the skin tones. Minor marks and flaws. Generally fine state of preservation.
