Shin Hanga: Pensive Bijin

Artist: Keigetsu Kikuchi
Format: Large oban tate-e: 20" x 14.75"

Subject: A portrait of the Heroine Koharu, deep in thought, holding her tobacco pipe, by the artist Keigetsu Kikuchi, 1879-1955, who was born in Nagano prefecture with the given name Kikuchi Kanji. He traveled in Europe during the twenties with two of his art colleagues. Back in Japan he became a teacher of Japanese print art at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and at the Kyoto City School of Painting. His favorite subjects were Bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. In 1934 he was honored by being appointed a member of the Imperial Art Board and in 1937 as a member of the Imperial Art Academy.

Date: c.1923

Condition: Full size. This fine example is completely free of the usual darkening of the gofun used for the skin tones. Minor marks and flaws. Generally fine state of preservation.

Colour: Fine with mica highlights
