Shin Hanga: The Reflective Girl
Lot AU27

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Artist: Keigetsu
Format: Oban tate-e: 17" x 11.5"

Subject: From an untitled series of prints hand-printed by Nishimura Kumakichi in 1923 this charming study of a reflective young bijin leaning on a tobacco pipe ranks as one of the most delightful bijin designs of the Shin Hanga. This example is particularly fine and does not suffer from the usual black oxidation of the white gofun used for the girl's face and hands.

Publisher: Blocks carved by: Yamagishi Kazue, Printed by: Nishimura Komakichi

Date: c. 1923

Condition: Fine colors. Full size. Hand-applied bokashi for the whisps of hair on the girl's neck. A tiny edge damage in bottom right margin. Minor creases, marks and flaws. Generally fine state of preservation.

Impression: Very fine impression with gauffrage and silver mica on the girl's Obi, tobacco pipe, under kimono and hair-tie.
