Description "Osaka, Kozu". The pale moonlight illuminates Kozu shrine, which has been deserted for the evening. But the megalopolis, Osaka, below the deck is still awake with hundreds of electric lights. Only the bright evening star can be seen on the darkening sky.

Kawase-Kozu, Osaka- 1.jpg is:

Original pre-war (no!) Hasui woodblock with the 6mm Watanabe seal. Signed and sealed lower/right. Image measures 14 3/8" x 9 3/8" (not including the margins). Woodblock is archivally mounted (corner mounts), matted and framed in a 1/2" wide modern 22" x 16" black oak frame. Woodblock has some minor condition problems. General overall toning. A few repaired edge tears with one or two slightly encroaching upon the image. A slight piece missing from the left margin as shown, and a missing lower/right corner which has been replaced. The missing corner did not intrude upon the image. All the problems aren't noticeable unless examined very closely.
An early and rare print by Kawase hasui title Kozu Osaka. The print has a full display page in both catalogues hotei and narazaki.
Published by watanabe 1924 copy right seal right margin.

The print is in perfect condition, excellent colors and registration.Very good bleed trough(several exposure of the same block) .extensive bokashi(colors gradation..) and visible wood grain in the sky.

Full oban size 15X10 inches.

Fresh from a Florida estate we are listing a large collection of Japanese woodblock prints, including many modern and classic designs. This Kawase Hasui measures 10 3/4 by 15 3/4 inches. Published by Watanabe before WWII. Kawase Hasui

Image Size: oban, about 10 x 15 in.
Condition: excellent color, toning in margins


Impression Excellent - very good.
Colors Very good.
Condition Good … Light toning. Foxing on the margins. A missing area and a small tear on the upper margin. A tear, about 1/2 inch long, on the middle left margin.

This almost mono-tone color version was included in the "Souvenirs of Travel, third series". The more colorful version was published later.
