Notes (1st edition)A Note on the 1970's/80's restrikes: Tanseisha edition: One of the 12-print sets, titled "Hashiguchi Goyo 60-Year Memorial) was published in an edition size of only 150 and is dated 1981, December 1st. I assume this to be the first edition by Tanseisha. It is obvious that Tanseisha subsequently published other sets after this date, using different printers. One of these later editions included an extra print, so a 13-print edition. Yuyudo editions: A 6-print set of bijin-ga in blue canvas tatou album with edition size of 750. A 12-print edition, size unconfirmed. A 2-print set of large-size scenes "Hand Mirror" and "Yabakei" with edition size of around 500. Iwasaki Shoten: Published "Woman Combing Her Hair" in an edition size of 180 in 1988, October 20 (see database entry 46012). Watanabe Shoichiro: Watanabe has recently (2017 or earlier) started publishing some of the Goyo scenes.

Goyo-Woman in a Summer Kimono.jpg is:

Woman in Summer Garment, 1920 (fine 1970's woodblock reprint)
Hashigushi Goyo (1880 - 1921)

Woman in Summer Garment- This classic Goyo print is reminiscent of the alluring images of Utamaro. The woman is Goyo’s favorite model Nakatani Tsuru, a waitress at Osaka's Icho restauraunt.

This Goyo reprint- In the 1970’s a small group of woodblock reprints were made of Goyo’s incredible images. His prints are so rare and sought after, these prints offered an opportunity to have a Goyo print without the expense of an original. Original Goyo images sell in the $7,500 - $20,000 range (this print being in the more expensive category).

This print comes with both original folders. It is in the original heavy rag presentation inner folder which fits inside a titled outer folder. See photo with inner folder.

Sealed- In blue in margin by publisher, carver and printer
Image size- 10 7/8” x 17 1/4” (same as original- large print)

Title:"Summer Kimono" ("Natsui no Onna")

Date: 1920 (Commemorative Edition, sanctioned by Goyo's family, c.1980's)

Image Size: 11" x 17 1/4"

Impression: Fine. Sumptuous soft pink "mica" background.

Condition: Fine.

Considered by many connoisseurs to be Goyo's finest image. One of a very few reprints made with the blessing of Goyo's heirs in the 1980's. In original presentation folder.

An alert eBayer has pointed out to me that I have mistakenly given the publisher as Tansheisha. In fact, the publisher is Yuyudo. I apologize for the error. However, the Yuyudo prints are at least equal in beauty to the Tanseisha prints, and the value of this item is unaffected.

Woman in Summer Kimono, 1920

Hashiguchi Goyo, 20th century master-

With the permission of Goyo’s heirs, a couple small commemorative runs of his prints were produced. These prints are also very rare today. But, they offer an opportunity to collect a Goyo woodblock reprint at a cost more in line with most collectors’ budgets. These reprints were produced to the same exacting standard of Goyo’s originals. Expert carvers were contracted to produce the highest quality wood blocks and printers meticulously reprinted Goyo’s originals with the same attention to quality and detail. These reprints are on beautiful, hand made paper printed with the same colors and mica detail as Goyo’s originals. The prints offered tonight in our auctions are from one of those reprint sets.

This Print; Woman in Summer Kimono- A beautiful Goyo print that is considered one of his finest works. The model for this image is Nakatani Tsuru a waitress at Osaka’s Icho restaurant and Goyo’s favorite model. In this inciredble work, Nakatani stares at the viewer as she sits in front of a mirror. She is pulling a transparent summer kimono over her. A captivating print that shows the lovely Nakatani in a quiet and private moment. Fine color and beautiful, soft mica detail in the background.

Set of 6 Prints by Goyo in the original case. Excellent condition. Numbered edition, marked "not for sale" in Japanese - evidently this was a private publication when it was first created. These prints were produced by Yuyudo publishing house in Japan. Often they are sold individually, sometimes described as being sanctioned by the family of Goyo. That was a separate edition that was sold publicly in a limited edition of 150(?), evidently. This is different but the printings and carvings are just as masterly. Probably some of the same printers and carvers were involved.
