Warning: As of around 2012 there is a new publisher of this scene: Sakai Kokodo (酒井好古堂). It looks very similar to the Watanabe version but can be purchased in Japan for around $200. The blocks were carved by Asaka Motoharu (朝香元晴)and printed by Hishimura Toshi(菱村敏). Please be careful that you don't accidently pay an exorbitant price for such a print mistakenly thinking it is an original Watanabe-published print. Dishonest sellers are actively selling this edition on eBay and an auction in Japan. Please see my research note here:

This is the ultimate print that any Shin-hanga print collector dreaming. Hasui's most loved and sought after: "Zojo-ji Temple, Shiba". A "National Treasured" print. Dated Showa 14 (1925). Published by Watanabe with seal A on left margin. This publisher seal was used from 1924 to 1930 so it could be the first edition. Size: 10.5" x 15.5". Not backed or laid down. Never framed. Excellent condition, color and great impression. Light crease on lower margin. .

川瀬 巴水。1883年(明治16年)5月18日 - 1957年(昭和32年)11月7 日)。大正・昭和期の浮世絵師、版画家。1918年 (大正7年)、風景画家として世に出る。以後、数多くの木版画を発表。 衰退した日本の浮世絵版画を復興すべく吉田博らとともに新しい浮世絵版画の叙情的世界に、自然に肉薄する近代人の視点を導入することにより、独自の世界を展開した。享年74歳。 |
