It looks very similar to the Watanabe version but can be purchased in Japan for around $200. The blocks were carved by Asaka Motoharu (????)and printed by Hishimura Toshi(???). Offered for sale is a wonderful, first edition Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), titled Zozoji Temple in the Snow, from the series Twenty Scenes of Tokyo, 1925. There is an A Watanabe seal in the lower right margin, signifying that this is a first edition printing of the design. This print is has wonderfully fresh colors and is in very good condition, aside from some faint toning on the reverse and residue/thinning from a prior mount in top reverse margin. The image measures approximately 14 1/4 by 9 3/8 inches, plus margins. |
This is the ultimate print that any Shin-hanga print collector dreaming. Hasui's most loved and sought after: "Zojo-ji Temple, Shiba". A "National Treasured" print. Dated Showa 14 (1925). Published by Watanabe with seal A on left margin. This publisher seal was used from 1924 to 1930 so it could be the first edition. Size: 10.5" x 15.5". Not backed or laid down. Never framed. Ad's, news text, black and white as well as color plates with original tissue cover pages; one original block print. Printed on paper about the same weight as magazine stock, but not slick. The color plates and block print are printed on sturdier stock. Measures 10 - 1/2" x 15", 184 pages. The Osaka Maninichi Publishers. "Whoever seeks facta and truth as the first step in forming correct judgment about Japan and the Japanese today, will find here the best source of reliable information obtainable. A word to the Wise is sufficient." . . . Quoted from the top of the contents page. The following page is tissue cover page over a black and white high quality plate showing H.I.H. Tsugu-no-Mia, The Crown Prince of Japan. The next page has a short insert explaining that this publication is meant to show the industrial activities of Japan and the Empire of Manchu that has come to stay. There are 8 full page plates, the image of the Crown Prince, followed by 7 full color plates; "The Outer Wedding Robe for a Bride"; "A Japanese Garden"; "Dojoji"; "The Cranes": "A Folding Fan"; "Nara Dolls"; and "Zojoji". The last being a woodcut print in typical ukiyoe style. CONDITION: All the plates are here along with the tissue cover pages on which the description of the plates is printed. The pages have yellowed and appear to be brittle around the edges especially. The outer layer of the spine is missing, bumps around the edges of the covers. |
