The artworks displayed on JAODB are not for sale

Notes (1st edition)Published title: ?? ??? (August:A Sheer Summer Kimono) Commonly used unofficial title: "Evening Cool - A Beauty with Fan" (??? - ?????) Description: A bijin is holding a blue round fan. She is wearing a sheer black "Ro" kimono. The see-through arms and undergarments' designs were masterfully carved and printed. Published by Osaka Mokuhansha (Osaka Woodblock Print Company) on the 18th of September, 1930. I have confirmed the title and dating of this print because my copy was fortunately housed in the publisher's original presentation folder. The rarity of this scene meant that the correct title remained unknown for a prolonged period, resulting in the more generic title of "Beauty with Fan" being adopted. This print is from a series that was meant to be published monthly to subscription clients of the publisher, with one print being published per month. However, it appears only two prints were ever published: this print, and "An Evening in July" (?? - ??): see here for this scene. Medium/Technique Woodblock print. Width Item 11.2 inches = 28.5 cm Height Item 16.9 inches = 43.0 cm Artist: Oda Tomiya (1896-?) Signature: Tomiya. Publisher: Osaka mokuhan-sha (?????) written in the lower left margin and the seal above the publisher cartouche at lower right. Signature: "Tomiya saku" (created by Tomiya) ???? Seals: Carver: Yamada Sotojiro ????? The accompanying folder also lists Yamaguchi Zoroku ???? and "????" (perhaps meaning "several other company employees") as carvers. Printer: Naito Koshi ????. A beauty with an arresting gaze covers her mouth with her fan in a charming gesture. She stands out against a pure blue background. Oda Tomiya studied Japanese painting with Kitano Tsunetomi and worked as an illustrator for magazines and illustrated novels during the late Taisho period. There are very few of his woodblock prints surviving. This work seems to have been printed in Osaka. Very scarce.
