Published title: 八月 すきや (August:A Sheer Summer Kimono)
Commonly used unofficial title: "Evening Cool - A Beauty with Fan" (夕涼み - 団扇を持つ)
Description: A bijin is holding a blue round fan. She is wearing a sheer black "Ro" kimono. The see-through arms and undergarments' designs were masterfully carved and printed.
Published by Osaka Mokuhansha (Osaka Woodblock Print Company) on the 18th of September, 1930. I have confirmed the title and dating of this print because my copy was fortunately housed in the publisher's original presentation folder. The rarity of this scene meant that the correct title remained unknown for a prolonged period, resulting in the more generic title of "Beauty with Fan" being adopted.
This print is from a series that was meant to be published monthly to subscription clients of the publisher, with one print being published per month. However, it appears only two prints were ever published: this print, and "An Evening in July" (七月 - 夕べ): see here for this scene.

| Artist Bio: |
Oda Tomiya was a popular magazine and newspaper illustrator of the Taisho era. However, only three Tomiya "bijin-ga" woodblock prints are known to have been published, two via Osaka Woodblock Print Company and one via the publisher Adachi. All three of these prints are rarely seen on the market nowadays. He is rumoured to have published one other woodblock print scene called "Yusuzumi" (Evening Cool) via a private publisher, however I have to this date not seen even a single example of this print. Yusuzumi is mentioned in this note from a Hanga-do document ( http://www.hanga-do.com/img/Hangadomeiran104.pdf ):
版画は、刊年不明だが昭和初期頃(昭和 9 年頃)と 思われる木版画《夕涼み》(白耀社版)、《七月 夕べ》《八 月 すきや》(大阪木版社版)などの美人画の制作がある。
Yusuzumi is the act of enjoying the summer evening while cooling off outdoors at dusk after a hot summer day, or when the heat of the day has subsided. 小田富弥は、北野恒富に日本画をまなび、大正末期より
挿絵界を描くようになりました。時代小説、
