Title Arranging Hair After a Bath - rare -
Artist Hakuho Hirano 1879-1957
Description A beauty is arranging hair after a bath. Typical Hakuho's bijin prints with muted colors. Fine pink gradations around the contour of the body. Hakuho was an accomplished Nihon-ga painter. He made only six recorded bijin-ga (depicting beautiful women) prints. Two of them were shown in the famed Toledo Exhibition in 1936.
The alluring "bijin" (the beauty) prints in Shin Hanga period have been the highlight of Japanese woodblock print making tradition. Many of the originals from the period command the prices over $3000 today.
Seal Artist's seal (Haku) on the lower left under the date.
Dated 1932.
Medium Woodblock print.
Impression Excellent - very good ... Lightly embossed.
Colors Excellent - very good ... Fine gradations.
Condition Excellent - Very good ... Lightly creased.

PRINT SIZE: This overall print measures about 15-3/8 inches by 10-3/4 inches.


The image area measures about 14-3/8 inches by 10- 1/16inches.

PRINT HISTORY: On May 6, 2005, this print was found and purchased from a store that sold used books that was in the process of closing and is no longer in business. I found this print under a stack of papers along with other prints in the store. The previous owner of the print informed me that this print was part of a collection that her and her husband had acquired years ago.

Subject: A naked girl, fresh from the bath, putting a poppin (a musical toy pipe) into her hair-do.

Condition: Full size. A minor paper flaw on the girl's shoulder. Generally fine state of preservation.

Colour: Very good

Impression: Fine with extensive blind printing on the girl's body
