1920's Pencil Signed "Shoda Koho" Woodblock "Morning Mist"

Koho SHODA - 1875-1925?

Information about this Shin Hanga artist is very much in the darkness, beginning with the dates. Helen Merritt lists an artist known as Shoda Koho with the dates 1875-1925. Amy Riegle Stephens lists him in "New Wave" with 1871-1946. Apparently the same artist is meant. I'm personally leaning towards what Helen Merritt has to say. Koho Shoda published with Nishinomiya Yosaku who was associated with Takejiro Hasegawa (1853-1936). Anyone with information on this artist or print please feel free to share your knowledge. The woodblock that you are bidding on is a beautiful handcolored landscape titled "Morning Mist". This rare print does not have Koho's censord seal, but it does have his original signature in pencil (bottom right corner). The woodblock also has some information on the back. The print was printed by Takejiro Hasegawa. That is also in pencil (bottom left corner). The top left corner has what appears to be the title "Morning Mist", and right above it reads; No. 304 (in pencil). The bottom right reads; Made In Japan, and right under it is what appears to be a LE number JP 66/250. Unfortunately on top of all that beautiful coloring there is overall foxing due to the age. There is some kind of moisture damage (refer to pics), and around the edges there is some breakage due to the age of the paper, but it does not effect the art itself.

Overall Dimensions: 15" x 10"

Hasegawa catalog no 1107

Koho (18th century) Japanese. This item is an original woodblock print measuring 9" x 14", with margins, 10" x 15". The condition is very good - no evidence of stains or matburn - never been framed - the glue in the upper corners is visible on the front of the print (see photo). It is attached to a thick paper backing at the top corners with a small spot of glue. The paper is a medium thickness fiber type paper, and when held to the light, faint horizontal lines are visible (similar to a watermark). Stamped in ink on the back of the backing paper is "Koho Early 18th".
