Subject: An urban widow of the Kansei era (1789-1801). A woman reading a book, her cat sleeping beside her on a Kotatsu (a low table also serving as a brazier). Her eyebrows are painted in light blue, which indicates that they had been shaved, following the customs of married women in the Edo period. The cat is hiding its head under the front paws to keep warm.

Condition: Full size. Album backing paper. Minor soils, foxing, marks and flaws. Generally very good state.
