Kawano, Kaoru- WOMAN HOLDING A BABY- 2.jpg is: KAORU KAWANO GIRL WITH BABY/ MADONNA AND CHILD JAPAN 1916-1955 Original wood block in colors (c. 1955). The image size is 15"x9 1/4" on 11 1/4"x17" heavy rice paper, with margins. Signed by the artist with the chopmark in red in the lower right corner of the image. There is a number in the upper right margin. With the publisher's seal in the lower right corner verso. With the artist's name and title verso in pencil. This is a fine impression in very good condition. There is some faint creasing in the image which may have been produced when the print was being pulled. Also, there are two groups of indentions in the upper right margin and lower right margin. |

EACH FEATURES ANOTHER CREATURE, OFTEN BIRDS BUT HERE A BABY - ALLUDING TO THE CHRIST CHILD OF COURSE. LIKE KIYOSHI SAITO AND OTHER 20TH CENTURY WOODBLOCK ARTISTS, HE DELIBERATELY USED THE WOODGRAIN FROM SPECIAL BLOCKS TO ENHANCE THE VISUAL IMAGE. THIS PRINT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OTHER THAN A VERY SLIGHT MATT BURN TO THE RIGHT OF THE IMAGE. THE PRINT HAS KAWANO'S SEAL IN RED AND A PENCILLED SIGNATURE IN ENGLISH. THE IMAGE SIZE IS 10" x 14 3/4". THE PAPER SIZE IS 11 1/4" x 17". |
This is a very nice Japanese woodcut/woodblock color print of a woman holding a baby and a cross in the background. It reminds me of the Madonna and child and the Cross in the background. The image is very bold and striking. The image size measures approximately 10 x 14 inches and the frame measures about 17 x 21 inches. The print is original to the frame and I have chosen not to remove it. The signature is signed in pencil and can be seen in the lower right corner below the artist's cartouche. I do not see any tears, stains or other imperfections. |
This is one of Kaoru Kawano's (1916-1965) strongest compositions. It shows a young mother with a baby wrapped in her robe. The striking creamy white of the mother's face directs the design with elegant simplicity. The print is signed in pencil in the image below the figure and the artists stamp is to the right of the figure. The print measures 14 7/8" x 10". |
Monday, 16 January 2006 ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT WOMEN & CHILD & CROSS VERY GOOD CONDITION, NO DAMAGE, NO FADING OR MATTE BURN MEASURES 16 1/2" x 11 1/8", INCLUDING MARGINS THIS PRINT ALSO HAS A SEAL ON REAR LOWER CORNER I HAVE LISTED TWO OTHER PRINTS BY THE SAME ARTIST THAT I HAD BOUGHT TOGETHER ALONG WITH THIS ONE THERE WAS A NEWSPAPER INSIDE THE FRAMED PRINT, FROM JAPAN NOV. 1965 (Ross- but which of the three had the newspaper?). |
OFFERED IS THIS KAORU WOODBLOCK PRINT OF A WOMAN HOLDING A BABY UNDER HER ROBE. WITH THE CROSS IN THE BACKGROUND I SUSPECT THIS TO BE A REPRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN MARY WITH THE BABY JESUS. THE SIZE IS 10 1/16" X 14 7/8". THE SIZE OF THE FRAME IS 16" X 26". THE WOODBLOCK IS MOUNTED ON BOARD WHICH IS MOUNTED ONTO A CLOTH LINED BOARD. THE CONDITION IS VERY GOOD. IT IS PENCILED SIGNED IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER. THE AGE IS FROM THE 1950'S TO THE EARLY 1960'S. |
