The artworks displayed on JAODB are not for sale

Notes (1st edition)This scene is by Ishiwata Koitsu (signed Toko), not by Tsuchiya Koitsu or Kawase Hasui. On later (post-war) editions the publisher Doi Eiichi changed the artist seal to that of Kawase Hasui, I assume to increase sales because Hasui is a far more recognised artist. ??(????) ?????? ??8?(1932) ??? ???? 39.2x26.5cm. ???

ORIGINAL SIGNED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK

If we were to guess a date we would say somewhere between the late 1700s into the 1930s.

Measures about 13 1/2" by 10".

The top & right borders have been trimmed off but the artwork remains. And judging from the signature, we would guess about 1/4" of the artwork on the bottom has been trimmed off.

Otherwise in wonderful condition. A strong image with little or no fading.

Attached is a picture of a Toko print. My husband and I have several prints
by Hasui. In addition we own the four season prints by Bakufu Ohno. In our
collection is also several Kunisada triptych's along with one that has
Japanese writing underneath the wood block print that is possibly from
Kudisada himself?

We would love to send you a complete portfolio of all of our prints and
other Japanese artwork on a CD but we would need your address. Another
option would be to send you a slide show if you feel that you have an
interest in this artwork.

Let me give you a little history as to how we acquired these beautiful works
of art. My Great Uncle, Dr. John Mooney was a Doctor in Japan after WWII -
he collected and purchased for himself multiple Japanese prints, inro's,
netsuke's, closissone & ceramic vases and also received many items as gifts
from patients. The prints were shipped to Dr. Mooney's widowed sister - Mrs.
Sabina Mooney Seifert in New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania sometime after WWII.
Dr. Mooney returned from Japan and lived his remaining years with his
widowed sister and niece until his passing December 18, 1967. The prints
were kept in the family home by Dr. Mooney's niece, Ms. Mary Seifert. Ms.
Mary Seifert passed away at the age of 82 in July of 2007. The contents of
the home were willed and acquired by us in September of 2007.

Very fine c. 1933 impression by Toko (Ishiwata Kôitsu / Koitsu) entitled "Moonlight over Enoshima Beach " . Enoshima has been a popular excursion destination for a hundred plus years . Nearby Enoshima Island (seen as a shadow behind the tree limbs) is a leafy 1000-year-old religious site with three shrines. The print itself measures 15 1/2" x 10 1/4" and the image is 9 1/2" x 14 1/4" . It is in good condition w/ no fading. Framed in the late 70's and hung in a windowless hallway for a few years until the décor changed. Quality paper w/ one deckle edge . Sold in its black " bamboo " like wood frame .
