Designs created during the war are seldom seen due to paper rationing at that time, and the fact that Watanabe had a dwindling number of foreign customers. As a result, he printed fewer examples. Properly stored since original purchase from S. Watanabe print shop. Friday, 2 December 2005 ARTIST: Kawase Hasui SUBJECT: Grapes & apples PUBLISHER: Print bears the Watanabe "C" seal indicating an early, original impression DATE: 1940 SIZE: oban design measures 10.25" x 15.25" CONDITION: Excellent color & impression. Very slight browning to the very top edge of the top margin (about 1/16" if that). Remants of two old Watanabe sale stickers on verso which in no way effect image. NORE: Very unusual subject for Hasui who, of course, is known for his landscapes |
