Notes: The only still life of fruits Hasui completed in his oeuvre of over 600 works on paper. Designs created during the war are seldom seen due to paper rationing at that time, and the fact that Watanabe had a dwindling number of foreign customers. As a result, he printed fewer examples. Properly stored since original purchase from S. Watanabe print shop.
Narazaki writes that, 'Although Hasui rarely designed prints other then landscapes, he was adept in the depiction of still lifes, flowers and birds as well as portraits'. - Hotei Vol.1, pg. 115 |

Provenance: The collection was initially purchased directly from S. Watanabe print shop in the mid-1940's and has always been properly stored away in a single owner collection. The majority of the works showcase rarely seen MINT colors; several far exceeding numerous examples seen in prior collections. |

川瀬 巴水。1883年(明治16年)5月18日 - 1957年(昭和32年)11月7 日)。大正・昭和期の浮世絵師、版画家。1918年 (大正7年)、風景画家として世に出る。以後、数多くの木版画を発表。 衰退した日本の浮世絵版画を復興すべく吉田博らとともに新しい浮世絵版画の叙情的世界に、自然に肉薄する近代人の視点を導入することにより、独自の世界を展開した。享年74歳。 |
