Notes (1st edition)We suspect that this scene is one of several large-oban format Koitsu works that were published as post-war first editions by Doi Eiichi in the early 1950s. No pre-war Doi Sadaichi strike has ever been observed, and we have confirmed that carver Harada did not work for Doi pre-war.

Notes (this edition)
These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.:
This is a nice old Japanese print depicting a night scene at Miyajima. It could be the work of Kawase Hasui but I am not an expert. It depicts a glowing night scene of the famous Miyajima torii. The paper size is 11" X 17" and the image size is 10" X 15 1/4". The image is predominantly in rich blues contrasted with the yellow glow of the ancient stone lanterns. The print is in good condition. The corners had been mounted at one time and there are a few minor creases . The print is signed and has a red seal. There is some writing on the right margin which is done by hand. There is a good bleed through of colors on the back side.

Miyajima in the Rain
A pristine example of this very popular night scene. Published by Doi with the circular watermark in the upper left corner. Carver: Harada, Printer: Yokoi. It is still attached to the original backing paper of the presentation folder.

"Miyajima in the Rain"
by Tsuchiya Koitsu, 1941
oban

Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Miyajima in Rain.” Originally published in 1941; margin is dated “Showa 16.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Pristine condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures 15 ¼” x 10 1/8”, plus full margins.

This is a very beautiful woodblock print by noted shin hanga printmaker Tsuchiya Koitsu. Excellent color and impression; the crisp impression and the very thin paper would tend to indicate an early edition, but there are no carver/printer seals present. Outstanding bleed through to the back of the paper. It measures about 15 1/2 x 10 plus full margins. Very nice condition. This wonderful Japanese woodcut print is by Koitsu. It is in very good condition with beautiful color and approx. 17 x 11 1/2 inches.

JAPANESE WOOD BLOCK PRINT SHINTO SHRINE in WINTER

JAPANESE WOOD BLOCK PRINT SHINTO SHRINE in WINTER. Beautiful blending of colors of blues and grays in this wood block print. Winter scenes are much more difficult to find than others. I really like the streaks of rain, especially coming through the tree on the left. Note the antelope figure in the shaded foreground. I was told this piece and many others I purchased were obtained by the original owner ( the seller's father) in Japan in the 1960's, however I don't really know the age of the wood block prints. Some Ebayers have told me that some were from the 1930's or 1920's. The print is signed in the lower left corner. I cannot identify the back sticker, because I am not familiar with the Japanese characters. Some of the other prints I have say "SHINAGAWA", but this one does not. Size of the actual print is 9 -3/4" by 14 -1/2", a very handsome size. The frame is 13 -3/4" by 18 -3/4. The wood block print is simply framed in a black painted wood frame, under glass.
