Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Asakusa Kinryusan.” Originally published in 1938; margin is dated “Showa 13.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Beautiful condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures15 ¼” x 10 1/8”, plus full margins.

Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu, entitled "Asakusa Kinryuzan in the Full Moon". This superb vintage print was published in July 1938 ( Showa B ) by Doi Hangaten. The carver was Harada, and the printer was Gotou. This print is in excellent condition, with no tears, creases, or fading. There is only one tiny dot of foxing ( on the verso ) and virtually no toning whatsoever. All margins are intact, and there is outstanding bleedthrough to the verso. The only noticeable flaw is some adhesive residue to the margins; fortunately, this will not at all show when the print is properly framed. This print measures 16.9" ( 42.6 cm ) high by 11.4" (29 cm ) wide ( oban format ).

Beautiful wooodblock print by Tsuiycha Koitsu, "Asakusa Kinryusan". Originally published in 1938, this example does not bear any publishers marks as was the case for many prints. This is a very finely executed print in excellent condition. The Japanese dealer it was purchased from believes it was likely printed in the sixties.
|
These are two of several I own that are very fine prints but have no publishers seal. They are clearly good prints. I purchased the pagoda print from an elderly Japanese print dealer at a print show about 5 years ago and the sailboat print from a dealer in Japanese antique furniture and ceramics as well as ukiyoe prints.
