Notes (this edition)
These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.:

Ross:

I have a Koitsu, see attached images.

It was once apparently mounted to a backer board of some type, and later
removed, so there is a layer of material/paper adhered to the backside.

The front image looks nice. The horizontal lightness across the sky in the upper 1/4 part of the image is not present. The sky in that region is
uniform. It was an artifact of my photography. Three images, with close
ups of the left and right seals.

Here is a rare find, a first edition woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949). First off let me say this, you will not find a better example of this print anywhere!!! This is the BENKEI BRIDGE print and it has a very dark deep rich blue color that the photos just cannot capture. The size of the print is about 10.5 x 15.75 and there is some creases that come from the printing process in the top margins. As you can see from the back-side photo's the bleedthru is very strong. It also has 3 small pieces of Japanese tape on the back side which you can see in the photo. It has the round Doi watermark in the top left margin. The Doi Hangaten Publishers seal is in the left margin along with the Yamada - Ono Hiko seals. Yamada was the carver and Ono Hiko was the printer. It is believed that Ono Hiko worked for Doi only one year in 1934.

Old Japanese Woodblock Moonlit Bridge Print

Here is an Old Japanese Woodblock Print for your consideration in a Moonlit Bridge motif. The print itself (excluding margins and frame) measures 9 1/8" X 14". Framed, the entire piece measures a total of 14" X 18 3/4".
I'm sorry that I can not articulately identify this work, but I am no expert in this field. Anyone out there in eBay land who can suggest an excellent reference material in this area would be greatly appreciated. I have no doubt this piece is old. It appears to have been framed in the 1940's or 1950's. The print appears to be older, though how much older I do not know. The woodblock bears a tag on the back that reads "Ace Art Shop - Tokyo."

The print remains in excellent condition and appears to have never been removed from the frame.

Old Japanese Woodblock Print, Unknown Artist
This is a beautiful print. About 11 x 16 inches. Full margins and strong impression. I keep thinking I should recognize the artist style or signature, but it just doesn't match anything I have for reference. Very probably pre WWII. Similar in style and color to Hasui. Excellent Condition

ANTIQUES AUCTION
Tuesday, December 13th, 2005
at The Frank Jones Center, Portsmouth, NH
Saturday, 24 December 2005

Dear Ross,

I'm sending a jpeg of it just as it hangs on my wall… note the water stain in the upper left. It does not appear to have reached the print itself. The print is "glued" to the back sheet of paper all along its left side. The backing in the frame is clearly not original (teak plywood), but the frame itself, judging from the hardware, might be.

Happy solstice! Steve
Koitsu-Benkei Bridge at Night- Full40.jpg is:

This is a gorgeous woodblock print by shin hanga master Tsuchiya Koitsu. It is an early postwar printing (1950s), as evidenced by the Harada/Yokoi carver/printer seals in the lower lefthand margin, and by the Doi publishers' watermark in the upper lefthand corner. The print is in beautiful condition but for two pieces of paper tape in the upper margin well out of the image. Superb color and impression. Oban size, about 14 1/4 x 9 1/2 plus full margins.

Description: Wonderful early edition Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) entitled "Benkei Bridge at Night" - one of Koitsu's most popular prints. It is signed "Koitsu" in the bottom right, and is marked with the "Shinsei" or genuine seal. It is dated "Showa hachi-nen" (Year 8 of the Showa era or 1933.) in the lower right margin. It is marked as being published by Doi in the left hand margin and printed and carved by "Harada-Yokoi." There is some debate as to when Koitsu prints with this particular publisher, printer, and carver seal were printed, but the time frame should be somewhere between 1936 and 1965.
Measurements: Framed: 21 1/2" x 16 3/4"; Image size: 14 1/4" x 9 1/2." This print was published in the oban size of 15" x 10."

Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu, titled “Benkei Bridge”. The print bears the seals of Harada and Yokoi, indicating that it is an early edition print. There are two paper tape hinges in the top margin. There is a small hole in the printed area, just below the bridge; I have the print in a portfolio with black backing, and it is virtually impossible to see, but it is there.

The print size is 16 x 11 inches. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. The artist’s signature and his chop stamp are at the lower right corner of the print. Four borders are intact. In the lower right border, there is written the title of this woodblock print and made in April Showa 8, which is 1933. This woodblock print is attached to an original Japanese mulberry backing paper in a protective folder only at the left edge of the print and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of original Japanese Washi paper.
Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Benkei Bridge.” Originally published in 1933; margin is dated “Showa 8.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Pristine condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures 12 ¼” x 9 1/4”, plus full margins.
