Thanks to Josef for this entry:
I have a watercolor from this artist showing a young girl with ubrella/parasol carying a baby on her back. The quality is the same, very fine artwork.
I tried to find something about the artist but without success. And it seems to me that you are in the same situation, so I will tell you what I found; maybe this findings are helpful.
My sheet was framed in Medan, a town in indonesia. E. M. Mohamed was the owner of the shop.
Then I found that the artist made this watercolor by copying postcards. The reference card is "Nagasaki Database ID 2539".
After recognizing that Kimbei sold in his shop postcards and much bigger black and white photogrphs that will be colored by hand on the customers request, I think Tani was one of his workers who did this job. These colorists had for sure the skills to make such fine watercolors.
The similarity to the postcard is striking and I think it is highly likely that, indeed, Tani used the postcard as a basis for this watercolour. The postcard is attributed to Kusakabe Kimbei (1841 - 1934) and it has been given the title "Japanese Mother with Her Three Children". Clearly the postcard is of two young girls, and they are perhaps carrying their baby brothers. |
