Thanks to Andrew for this entry.
Here is the complete Shoen Bijin Gafu (松園美人画譜) including cover, contents page, and colophon. The date for this edition is Taisho 2 (1913), and in libraries there appear to be slightly earlier editions from Meiji 42 (1909). Unsodo in Kyoto is the publisher. (They have also republished three of these designs recently using the original blocks, and are selling them now.) The book is oban size, while the printed area is a bit smaller, maybe chuban? Possibly because the book is relatively large, it was stored folded for many years and has a permanent center fold. It has dirt and grime on some pages, and the red cover has bled through slightly to the first picture. There also appears to be oxidizaton of some of the dyes, particularly in faces and hands, but overall condition is reasonable.
The book has 12 woodblocks of bijin both from the time when the prints were made, and from history. |
