Notes: Pre-war editions have a Limitation seal on the reverse, and sometimes has "Made in Japan", stamped on the reverse. Kawaguchi 2nd editions have copyright seal in lower left margin, and seal of printer (Komatsu) and carver (Maeda) in lower right margin.

One of sixteen prints produced jointly by the Tokyo publishers Sakai and Kawaguchi in a limited edition printing.

Benten Pond, Shiba

The pond filled with flowering water lilies and two women stand on the bridge- a spectacular print! The rich greens are beautiful in contrast with the flowers and colorful kimonos. This image is considered a Hasui masterpiece. The Boston Museum of Art has this print in their 20th century collection- wonderful!

Signed- Kawase Hasui with red artist’s seal “sui”
Sealed- Publisher Kawaguchi, later edition original, from original blocks
Image size- 14 1/4” x 9 1/2” (oban yoko-e)
Condition- Excellent, no toning, tears, not mounted, full margins

Artist Bio: 

川瀬 巴水。1883年(明治16年)5月18日 - 1957年(昭和32年)11月7 日)。大正・昭和期の浮世絵師、版画家。1918年 (大正7年)、風景画家として世に出る。以後、数多くの木版画を発表。 衰退した日本の浮世絵版画を復興すべく吉田博らとともに新しい浮世絵版画の叙情的世界に、自然に肉薄する近代人の視点を導入することにより、独自の世界を展開した。享年74歳。
