Dear Dr Walker
I recently (March 2015) acquired the following watercolour by Masano (Masana) Kawakubo and whilst trying to research details about the artist I came across your database of Japanese works of art. As you appear to have details of very similar watercolours (and the same temple complex) by this artist I thought you might like to add the details of my painting on to your database to help others also researching this artist’s work.
I know very little about the painting and nothing about its previous owner(s) or how it came to the UK. The picture is an original and is painted onto paper which has been mounted onto a board and has a gold mount surround; currently it is unframed although it was obviously framed once. From the internet I have established that the artist painted several pictures of the Nikko temple complex and exhibited some of them at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, but I have no idea which ones. Size of my watercolour is approx 7.5” x 21” inches (the mount opening). The watercolour itself is slightly larger but as the mount is glued to the board backing the picture I don’t know its exact size. The gold coloured mount is typical of the type found with late 19th /early 20th pictures. Subject is of the Yomei Mon Gate, Treasure Storehouse and other shrine and temple buildings at Nikko in Japan. The watercolour is signed M.Kawakubo and is in a very good condition with the colours still quite vibrant. |
