Notes: This is an extremely rare bijin-ga from an important series showing the changing role and growing independence of Japanese women in the late Taisho and early Showa periods. The word "Moga" is short for "modan gaaru", or modern girl. The word was applied to young women who shunned tradition by dressing in Western shoes, dresses, and wearing Western makeup and jewellery, suitably complemented by a Western-style marcel wave hair-do. See here for more discussion of Moga in the Taisho-era.
