Artist Ginnosuke YOKOUCHI
(1870-1942)
Title "Ohashi Bridge in Rain"
(given name)
Date ca1920/30's
Provenance Consigned by a knowledgable Florida print collector/dealer.
Image Size LARGE 12 7/8 x 19 1/4
Technique Original watercolor.
Superbly executed shading, life-like shadowing and "wet" appearance; nicely detailed.
Condition Nearly Excellent. Fresh, strong colors. (Very faint mat-line image edges--otherwise absolutely flawless. Laid-down onto thin acid-free backing.) An amazingly fresh painting.
Comments Beautiful scene of a lively bridge crossing--an image that has drama, movement and conveys the pace at that time in Japan on a rainy day. The wooden planks on the bridge look and feel wet. Well known as a painter of impressionistic landscape watercolors, in 1935 Yokouchi also began self-carving and printing his own woodblock prints--producing a total of 8 self-published designs. A unique, truly ONE-of-a-kind artwork. (Learn more) Reminiscent of Hiroshige's prints--this masterful work is clearly finest watercolor we've ever encountered.
