Note Uchida Han is an important Japanese publishing company with branches in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Founded in 1919, the company is still in existence today as an active publisher of shin-hanga in addition to publishing re-strikes of Edo period ukiyo-e prints.

Title Summer Cool at Kamo River - trial proof with hand writen notes very rare. provenance: Uchida Family Archives Artist Eiichi Kotozuka 1906-1979 Dated Ca. 1930s. Publisher Uchida. Medium/Technique Woodblock print. Impression Excellent - very good. Colors Very good. Condition Very good ... Slight toning. Slight foxing and slight stains. The reddish pigments on the top right corners were created by the digital camera, not on the actual print. They are pencil marks. Description People are having dinner on "kasadoko" (a temporary terrace fixed on the riverside of the Kamo river in Kyoto in summer.) Some hand written notations in pencil by the artist indicating the silhouettes of a geisha and a servant; people on the bridge should be darker and the correction of the shadow lines under the bridge. This trial proof before the first commercial edition might not have been sent for the actual production. Therefore, it might have been the unique trial proof. An rare example for the serious Japanese woodblock print collector. Note Uchida Han is an important Japanese publishing company with branches in both Tokyo and Kyoto. KOTOZUKA, EIICHI was born in Osaka in 1906. He studied at the Kyoto Specialist School of Painting and in the late 1940s was one of the four artists who founded a co-operative publishing company called Koryokusha in an effort to gain an artistic expression free of the major houses. Tokuriki, Tobei and Tasaburo were the other three involved. He has created quite a number of woodblocks covering unique scenes of Japanese tradition, flowers, landscapes and wildlife. He was a member of the Seiryusha Group of Liberal Artists and Died in 1979.
