The following information was taken from the original web listing of this artwork. Note that there may be some inaccuracies:
Rare Shinagawa Offshore by Kawase Hasui, 1920 published by Watanabe Shozaburo
The blocks for Hasui's earliest prints were destroyed in the devastating 1923 Kanto earthquake and they were never reprinted. Consequently, Hasui's pre-earthquake prints are among the rarest and most sought-after shin hanga.
Size. Oban, the paper is 10.25 " x 15"
Condition:
Paper: Slightly toned on the front and back. Mounting paper and marks in the corners on the back. A scuff in the paper top left margin. Minor creasing upper right margin. Mark: Penciled in the lower right is: " Hasui Kawase 1883 done circa 1923" Penciled on the back is: "T.M.A 30 1930" I tried searching for this in association with Japanese woodblock prints and I found that there was a large exhibit of prints at the Toledo Museum of Art in 1930. There could be an association. Color: Colors appear strong, but likely somewhat faded from new. The green on the island is still green. the boat is golden yellow. Sky is blue-grey. Water is blue, blue-green. |
