1916 FUGI NAKAMIZO
SIGNED WATERCOLOR

Fugi Nakamizo is better known for his etchings of wildlife. I think that his landscapes are so well-done with a spiritual quality that is undefinable.

He was born in 1889 and died in 1950. This picture was painted when he was 27.

Fugi was in a Japanese interment camp during WWII.

This painting is so very beautiful with the mountain in the background and the Japanese junks on the lake and their reflections on the water and the shoreline.

It measures 6 1/2 by 13 and is covered with tissue paper.

It was bought at a missionary's estate sale with a lot of Nakamizo's works.

Artist Bio:
Nakamizo was born in Japan and came to America in 1910 where he studied with, among others, Joseph Pennell. That made him, certainly, a competent etcher, and his etchings are in the collections of a number of American museums. But he was also a painter and, while the influence of Pennell is impossible to find in this striking watercolor, there is a personal style here that seems to span the gap between Japanese art and American Impressionism. Nakamizo was interned at the Topaz, Utah Japanese-American internment camp during World War II. He died in New York City.
