YOSHIDA - Japanese Watercolor Painting

HAKONE

A very nice watercolor painting by YOSHIDA. Though at auction, I have seen this signature attributed to Hiroshi YOSHIDA, I make no such claims. The title of this location is written in pencil on the verso along with some very tiny hiragana in the lower left corner. The face and the verso are UNMARKED. This watercolor painting dates before 1940. The size is 23.8 x 29.5 cm or 9 3/8 x 11 5/8 inches.

Artist Bio:
Very little is known about this artist. He/she was an accomplished artist active in the pre-war period. One owner writes 'in case it helps your research the info I have on the painting is as follows: it was bought in Japan in 1917 by H.S. Williamson when he was travelling back to India from England.'
A. Yoshida was not the famous woodblock print artist Hiroshi Yoshida! Please be careful of sellers trying to flog off their A. Yoshida watercolours as being by Hiroshi Yoshida. How can we discriminate between A. Yoshida and H. Yoshida watercolours? That is a good question, and I am currently writing a research article on this very subject. As a simple check, if your painting has all three of the following characteristics:
  • the first initial looks clearly like an 'A', or more usually, looks in-between an 'H' and an 'A'. The right-hand vertical stroke often extends below the baseline,

  • the first initial and the 'H' in YOSHIDA look distinctly different, and

  • the surname YOSHIDA is written in capital letters only (not mixed upper/lower case) with the bottom leg of the 'Y' being curly

then you have with little doubt an A. Yoshida watercolour.
