ANTIQUE 1900 SGN TOSUKE JAPANESE WATERCOLOR NIGHT RAIN
A VERY FINE ANTIQUE, CIRCA 1900, JAPANESE WATERCOLOR ON WATERCOLOR PAPER OF PEOPLE JOURNEYING HOME AT NIGHT IN THE RAIN. THEY CARRY JAPANESE LANTERNS TO LIGHT THE WAY. IN THE DISTANCE IS THE SILHOUETTE OF A PAGODA. THE RAIN IS CREATED BY FINELY SCRATCHING THE LINES THROUGH THE PAINTING TO THE PAPER BENEATH. SIGNED LOWER LEFT: S. TOSUKE. THE SHEET MEASURES 13-1/2" BY 20-1/2". THE REVERSE HAS A PAPER LABEL READING: MADE IN JAPAN, #3. WORK BY A JAPANESE ARTIST WORKING IN THE WESTERN ART TRADITION FOR SALE TO THE EXPORT MARKET. EXCELLENT CONDITION: PAINTING WITHOUT FADING, NO FOXING OR WATERSTAINS.
