Shin Hanga: Original Painting and Print Artist: Yamanaka Shoun Format: Painting on silk: 15" x 7.5"; o-tanzakuban tate-e: 14" x 7.5" approx
Subject: An original painting on silk, in sumi and colours, of a white cockerel, signed and sealed Shoun and a first edition impression of the ukiyo-e based on the same design. Unique.
Date: c.1900's
Condition: Painting attached at edges to a folder of Japanese hosho with tapes. Glue residue from a previous matting at top and bottom edges, otherwise fine.
Colour: Painting and print very fine
Impression: Print superb 1st edition printing; with gauffrage for the chicken feathers (not visible in scanned image).

Used the psudonym Shokoku (松谷) in his early career. 明治3年(1870年)高知県に生まれる。絵を山内家のお抱え絵師で狩野洞白の門人柳本圭吾に学び、更に狩野永岳の門人河田小龍に師事し、上京後、図案、染物の原図などを手がけ絵師として立った。明治27年東洋堂より刊行された「風俗画報」の挿絵を担当したのを皮切りに「新撰東京名所図會」と言うシリーズ312図を発表し、こうした雑誌挿絵を主要な活躍舞台としたのであった。 昇雲は維新以降の目まぐるしく変化する文化風俗に着手し、風俗記録画ともいうべき新しいジャンルを確立した。
