Description "Yuki no Asa" (Morning in Snow), for New Year's Day, January. From lithograph "Asahi Calendar" series supplement from Asahi Newspapers of Osaka. Contemporary beauties were depicted by well-known nihon-ga artists in Meiji-Taisho era.

山元春挙（やまもとしゅんきょ）
1872（明治5）～ 1933（昭和8 ）

滋賀県膳所出身。日本画, 円山派。
師：野村文挙、森寛斎。
明治5年11月24日、膳所の山元家に生まれたが、その後小杉家に養子となり小杉金右衛門を名乗るが後に山元家に復籍、1883年より京都の野村文挙に四条派の画技を学び春挙の号を受け、更に85年より森寛斎に円山派を師事。
86年に京都青年絵画研究会で「呉孟」「菊に雀」で褒状を受賞したのを皮切りに日本青年絵画共進会、全国絵画共進会で「菊慈童」が二等、内国勧業博覧会などで入選・受賞を重ね1907年に文展が創設されると第1回展より審査員に任命されるなど京都画壇を中心に活躍を示す。
また、1899年よりは京都市立美術工芸学校の教諭、1909年より京都市立絵画専門学校教諭(後に教授)、17年(大正6)には帝室技芸員、19年には帝国美術院会員に就任するなど育成や画壇に対しての貢献にも尽力を尽くした。
当初の四条派・円山派の写実技法に加え独自に西洋画の遠近描法などを取り入れた豪放な作域を確立、風景、人物、花鳥、動物など幅広く制作、当時の竹内栖鳳、菊池芳文らと共に新時代の日本画家として称された。 |
