The following information was taken from the original web listing of this artwork. Note that there may be some inaccuracies:

We are offering with no reserve a beautiful original watercolor by well regarded Japanese artist Fukutaro Terauchi (1891-1964), c1955.

The condition of the painting is very good. The colors are bright, the sheet is flat and in nicely kept condition. A slight degree of normal toning is apparent but only enhances the excellent vintage appearance of the painting.

The surface is clean and the pigments are rich, bright, and saturated. Very little fading has occurred and the warm aged patina is harmonious with the subject.

The painting is signed lower left "Terauchi" and a former owner's name "Torelli", appears on the rear. Remnants of cellophane tape appear on the middle upper and lower borders on the rear of the sheet.

The scene features a Japanese woman carrying a container and walking a path toward the viewer as she passes the dwellings seen on the right. A small body of water spanned by a footpath separates the figure from the dwellings, one of which displays a red paper lantern near the entry. Large trees in full bloom and other houses in the background amid a landscape of foliage completes the composition.

This is a beautiful watercolor and an attractive example of mid 20th century Japanese Modern style interpreting the artistry of earlier woodblock traditions.

The painting comes from our personal collection and has been in dry storage for at least ten years.
