Artist Bio: 
Bijin-ga scroll painter, and kuchi-e artist for Taisho-era magazine publications like Fujin Sekai, Fujokai, Fujin Gaho, etc. during 1915 to the early 1920s.
崎県南高来郡山田村(現・雲仙市吾妻町)に生まれる。本名文子。当時長崎市内にあった梅香崎女学校(現・梅光女学院)在学中に、長崎美術展覧会(商工奨励館)に《桜》を出品し、郷土史家・林源吉らに画才を認められ、1906(明治39)年東京女子美術学校(現・女子美術大学)に入学。卒業後は、同校で教鞭をとりながら寺崎廣業の門に入り研鑽に努めた。1913(大正2)年に《さすらい》が第7回文展に入選したのを機に、第8回展には《幼などち》《噂のぬし》が入選、前者は褒状を得た。その後も第9回展に《お鶴》、第11回展《身の幸・心の幸》(対幅)、第12回展《朝妻桜》(永見徳太郎旧蔵、現・中右コレクション)と入選を果たす。1921(大正10)年の第3回帝展では《清姫物語》5点組が入選し、同作品は翌年に他の帝展入選作とともに「国民美術協会展日本部門」(グラン・パレ、パリ)にも出品された。門下生約100人とともに「銀葉会」を設立し、また1920(大正9)年に東京の女性画家の団体「月耀会」創立に参加するなど、女性画家の地位確立に努め、これからの日本画壇を担うと期待されたが、1922(大正11)年に惜しまれながら病歿。享年40。女性の強さ、母としての愛情、初々しい少女、激しい感情を秘めた女性の姿などを描き、いずれの女性像ももの言わぬ凛とした姿として描かれている点に玉葉作品の特徴がある。
