The Salt Maiden

Artist: Harunobu
Format: Chuban tate-e: 8.25" x 5.5"

Subject: Against a steely gray ground a study of Matsukaze, one of the 'brine' maidens, carrying her pails. Her name is inscribed on the title label of an inset picture of a book.

Date: 1770s

Condition: Some rubbing and creasing and wear, with a few areas touched in along the crease-mark. Signs of a previous mounting, verso. Generally fair state for a print of this period.

Colour: Good with some fading

Impression: Good

Other Notes: Rare. Not illustrated in Yoshida, Hillier nor in Ukiyo-e Taikei.
