Sagami River, from the series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji", by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

This is an archetypal Hiroshige image of a calm evening scene and Mt. Fuji. The boat in the foreground shows only its sail peeping above the tangle of reeds, as rafts slip along the river in the middle ground. This calm restful theme captures the signature mood of Hiroshige's aesthetic. A print like this one might make us agree with the general Japanese preference for Hiroshige over Hokusai.
