Four Stations of the Tokaido Highway, by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861)

This is one sheet from a series of prints that combines the images of four or five stations on the Tokaido into a single composition. This print shows four stations in Shizuoka prefecture. The river in the center of the print is the Oi River, and the travelers in front are seen climbing a hillside slope. Emphasizing the steep path, the horse's neck pulls into the work.
