Enjoying the Evening Breeze at Ryogoku , by Keisai Eisen (1791-1848)

The season for enjoying cool breezes at Ryogoku Bridge on the Sumida River ran from May 28th through August 28th of the lunar calendar. Fireworks were shot off over the river, and a great number of people joined in the festivities. This print seems to show this lively scene from a restaurant along the river banks. Eisen's distinctive style of women with their iridescent green lipstick are enjoying the fireworks overhead. The Ryogoku Bridge is packed with people.
