Suzuki Harunobu (c.1725-1770) Osen the Tea-shop Waitress
The central genres of ukiyo-e woodblock prints are actor prints and prints of beautiful women. Of those two genres, earlier generations of artists focused on the women of the pleasure quarters. With the advent of Suzuki Harunobu, developer of the nishiki-e full color print with its ability to reproduce detailed, realistic colors, artists began depicting the ordinary women of town. This print shows Osen, a famous young beauty who worked in a tea and drink shop at Edos |
