Notes (1st edition) | Extremely rare print, first published around late 1930's to early 1940's, as one scene from a three-print postcard series. I have no information regarding the publisher, but I can clearly see the artist name and the series title written on the series folder. The other two scenes are also listed here on JAODB.
Hasui made a trip to Korea in 1939, so these scenes most likely date to shortly after that time.
If I am not mistaken the series was issued by the famous department store Mitsukoshi (??), as the name text and seal look very similar to Mitsukoshi's.
This scene has recently (2018) been re-published by a US-based art dealer, so it may become commonly available. Although listed as a "first edition", it is undeniable that the first edition was published pre-war. |
