Publisher Matsuki Heikichi, Daikokuya. Medium/Technique Woodblock print. Description "Kodomo Asobi" (Children's Play). "Setsusen" . A group of children are engaing in the snow fight. Although Shoun Yamamoto studied the traditional Japanese painting "Nihon-ga" and was renowned for his depiction of charming beauties, he made numerous works for book illustrations and woodblock prints in the "Fuzoku-ga" (pictures of customs and manners) genre. "Children's Play" has been considered as one of Shoun's representative works. Unlike the children who had depicted previously in ukiyo-e, he depicted the lovely and active children with lively expressions on their faces. They wore the mixture of traditional Japanese and newly acquired Western style clothes. The children happily engage in the age-old plays such as snow fights, horse ride, dharuma. The series also introduced children's activities in the various traditional events in the four seasons.
