An original large woodcut in colors titled " WOOD PECKERS (B) " by Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano (1916-1965). Depicting a surrealistic image of a young girl's face within a metallic silver tree holding two woodpeckers. Pencil signed twice, once within the image below the red seal and also in the lower right margin. Self-published double oban print, #192 from an edition of 200. Production date unknown, but probably late 1950s. Previously matted and framed, this print is being offered as unframed and will be rolled and shipped in a Priority Mail tube.

Signature: Kaoru Kawano (within image in pencil, w/artist's seal in red) KAORU KAWANO WOOD PECKERS (B) 192/200 (in bottom margin, w/ Japanese title, all in pencil) (plus red seal on reverse) Dimensions: image: 15" x 22" h (38cm 56cm) paper: 17 3/8" x 23 3/4" h (44cm 60cm) Condition: the image is Very Good, but the paper and margins have the following issues ...the side margins have been slightly cropped; there are some handling creases (pics 2,3); a few spots of minor surface loss in the margins; tape remanants from previous matting on the reverse margins; slight darkening to paper not covered by matte; and ink and pencil notations in the lower right margins.

Japanese woodblock print, huge limited-edition Kaoru Kawano. Measures about 22 x 15 plus full margins. Pencil signed and numbered in an edition of 200. There is extensive use of silver mica in the image, giving the print a shimmery quality when illuminated. On the back of the print, there is an attached tag which says that it was carved and printed by the artist himself. Clean white paper, no condition problems to note. A very rare image, I think; it is one I have never seen before. Titled "Woodpecker B". A wonderfully whimsical print from an artist who is finally receiving the attention and appreciation he has long deserved.
