Rare Japanese woodblock print titled "Nine Dragon Pool, Diamond Mountains, Korea" by Elizabeth Keith
This Elizabeth Keith woodblock print of a scene of nine dragons in the Korean mountains based on local legend was published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1921. Watanabe was the most well-known publisher of shin hanga prints, and he also worked with such well-known artists as Kawase Hasui, Ito Shinsui, and Charles W. Bartlett. According to the Miles catalogue on Elizabeth Keith, only about 20 copies of this design were ever printed. The condition of this print is very good with some light toning (mostly noticeable on the back of the print) and a minor matline around the image. There are lovely embossed lines in the waterfall (also called gauffrage). It is signed in pen in the bottom margin, and sealed EK 1921 in the lower right corner of the print. The print measures approximately 6.75 x 14.5 inches in size. |
