Edition of 100 prints. Small edition of 100, so I believe this to be one of Kawano's earlier designs. Japanese title is simply 'Kusa' (Grass). Red Kawano seal at lower right within image. Title, edition number, and artist's name in lower margin. Usually has a 'Self-Carved Self-Printed' tag attached to the print's verso. |

For sale is a rare large format Japanese woodblock print by Kaoru Kawano titled ON THE GRASS. Size is 16" by 24" on thick washi. The artist has signed in pencil in bottom margin, this is #2 of an edition of 100. Condition is very good, some overall toning, modest waviness in margins due to large size. The reverse has attached paper which reads Self Carved And Self Printed Kaoru Kawano. The artist only puts edition sizes on his rare large format prints. |

Kaoru Kawano was a very popular artist for his distinctively styled depictions of figures, especially children. He uses the wood grain patterns to lender the textures and the mood to the works.
