An original large woodcut in colors titled " WOOD PECKERS (B) " by Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano (1916-1965). Depicting a surrealistic image of a young girl's face within a metallic silver tree holding two woodpeckers. Pencil signed twice, once within the image below the red seal and also in the lower right margin. Self-published double oban print, #192 from an edition of 200. Production date unknown, but probably late 1950s. Previously matted and framed, this print is being offered as unframed and will be rolled and shipped in a Priority Mail tube.

Signature: Kaoru Kawano (within image in pencil, w/artist's seal in red) KAORU KAWANO WOOD PECKERS (B) 192/200 (in bottom margin, w/ Japanese title, all in pencil) (plus red seal on reverse) Dimensions: image: 15" x 22" h (38cm 56cm) paper: 17 3/8" x 23 3/4" h (44cm 60cm) Condition: the image is Very Good, but the paper and margins have the following issues ...the side margins have been slightly cropped; there are some handling creases (pics 2,3); a few spots of minor surface loss in the margins; tape remanants from previous matting on the reverse margins; slight darkening to paper not covered by matte; and ink and pencil notations in the lower right margins.

Artist Bio: 
Kaoru Kawano was a very popular artist for his distinctively styled depictions of figures, especially children. He uses the wood grain patterns to lender the textures and the mood to the works.
