Selling a very fine and scarce Kaoru Kawano woodblock print titled "Little Flora". The image size is 16 1/4"x22 1/2" and the paper size is 17 3/4" x 23 1/2". The edition size is marked 8/50 very small. The print is signed in pencil and numbered outside the image. The "Self-carved- Self-Printed seal is on the back of the print with a seal. The condition is good. There is masking tape on the back from the previous framing and there is one small spot in the image as shown. Aside from these issues it is quite original and good. |

Kaoru Kawano was a very popular artist, known for his distinctively styled depictions of figures, especially children. He uses the woodgrain patterns to render the textures and the mood to his works.
Double-oban-sized prints are almost always limited-edition lifetime strikes that are pencil-signed, editioned, and titled by Kawano himself. There are rare later editions that have stencilled titles, which I believe are posthumous strikes.
Large-oban-sized scenes with a pencil-signed signature (usually within the printed area) will be lifetime editions signed by the artist, while unsigned prints with a black round seal on the verso will be posthumous strikes.
