Notes (this edition) These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.: | Hi Ross,
I hope this email finds you well. I recently acquired this curiosity published by Takemura Hideo. It bears some resemblance to Koitsu's (more Shotei really) style though clearly not his signature. I'm wondering if you had any thoughts on it.

Hi Peter,
Yes I saw that print on eBay I think. You will be quite familiar with this artist: Nishimura Hodo. Take a look at some of his floral prints for matching signature. His non-floral scenes are quite rare.
Cheers,
Ross
Thanks Ross. I had just figured out it was Nishimura as well. Strange to see a shin hanga style print by him. It makes me think that he must be one of the mysterious artists who were designing the many prints similar to Shotei's. I've made a hobby of collecting the various Shotei look alikes and knock offs.

This is an original Hodo Nishimura print of a Bijin By Kiyomizu Temple in Rain. While Nishimura is famous and prolific for his kacho-e (prints depicting birds and flowers) he did do some more traditional shin-hanga prints.
This is a rare and beautiful print from 1930. It is very well preserved in a proper frame and mat as seen in the photos.
This print measures 15" x 6 1/2"(mitsugiri-ban/o-hosoban). I acquired this print from a WWII pilot's estate. |
