Notes (1st edition)Artist: Hasui, Kawase (1883-1957) - ???? Title: Dawn over Lake Shoji Date: 1935 Publisher: Watanabe - ?? Medium: Woodblock Format: Shikishi, 21.3 x 18.2cm (image size) Note from Ross: Very rare. First and only edition. The Hasui catalogue suggests that 20,000 copies of this calendar print were printed, along with 10,000 of the more commonly seen 1935 Miyajima calendar scene. I in no way believe 20,000 copies were made of this Fuji scene, although 10,000 Miyajima is possibly true. My view is based on my research database statistics. The number of times a print is represented in my database is approximately proportional to the number of prints of that scene published. I have the Miyajima scene represented in my database many times, but I don't have a single copy of the Fuji scene (until now, 2011), despite ten years of cataloguing prints. If 20,000 had actually been printed we would have seen this scene even more often than the Miyajima scene, which we can see multiple times during any single year. Admittedly, being a calendar print, many would have been discarded, but not to the extent that this print became this rare, and besides, the Miyajima print was also a calendar print in a smaller edition size, yet it is quite common. I'm guessing 200 or less of this Fuji scene were actually printed (a single run). Well, that's my take in the situation. This is definitely a rare Hasui print. Japanese modern woodblock mid-size (shikishi) print, by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), entitled 'Dawn over Lake Shoji' [Brown, Kawase Hasui (Hotei), #370], 1935, published by Watanabe Shozaburo but unsealed, print 7.25'' x 8.5'' Note: An alternate name, "Shojin" is sometimes used for this lake, however, a quick search in Japanese will reveal that this name is incorrect. The correct reading is "Shoji".

Hi Ross,

Aha, found it in the Hasui book.

See the attached notes for #370 and #371.

Even with all those copies made, I could only find one of these prints sold at auction for $xxx but it was very toned and laid down. So, probably pretty valuable.

Cheers,

Fran

Hi Fran,

I in no way believe 20,000 copies were made of the Fuji scene, although 10,000 Miyajima is probably true. It's all a matter of my database statistics. The number of times a print is represented in my database is roughly proportional to the number of prints of that scene published. I have the Miyajima scene represented in my database many times, but I don't have a single copy of the Fuji scene. If 20,000 had actualy been printed I (we) would have seen it even more often than that Miyajima scene, which we can see multiple times during any single year. Admittedly, being a calendar print, many would have been discarded, but not to the extent that the print became this rare. I'm guessing 200 or less were actually printed (a single run). Up for auction is this original woodblock print on heavy paper by the famous shin hanga artist Kawase Hasui (????). The total visible size of this piece is 8-3/8" wide x 7" tall. This beautiful print was unfortunately cut to the image edge and glued to a backing when it was re-framed in the 1980's and may need conservation work. The 1980's frame is 15-5/8" by 15-5/8" and in good to fair condition and it will come to you ready to hang. The image of the sunlight reflecting off the face of Mount Fuji from Lake Shoji makes for a truly appealing subject. In spite of it's condition, this is a very rare print of Kawase Hasui from 1935 and very collectible.
