Notes (1st edition)Published title: ?? ?? (An Evening in July) Unofficial adopted title: Bijin with Hair Comb (?????) Published by Osaka Mokuhansha (Osaka Woodblock Print Company) circa August/September of 1930. I have confirmed the dating of its mating print as September 18, 1930 (taken from the publisher's original print folder) so I expect the dating of this print to be very similar. The rarity of this scene meant that the official title remained unknown, resulting in a more generic title of "Bijin with Hair Comb" being adopted. Although the title word ?? ("Tabe") means "to eat", it also refers to the period of time of early to mid-evening when the main meal of the day is served, and when the well-to-do head out for a night of fine dining. This print is from a series that was meant to be published monthly to subscription clients of the publisher. It appears only two prints were ever published: this print, and "?? ???" ("August - A Sheer Summer Kimono").: see here for this scene. Artist: Oda Tomiya (1896-?) Signature: Tomiya. Publisher: Osaka mokuhan-sha (?????) written in the lower left margin and the seal above the publisher cartouche at lower left. Signature: Tomiya – saku (created) ???? Seals: Carver Yamada Tokuzo ????. Printer: Naito Koshi ????. Supervisor: Fujikawa Rohei ?: ????

Comments - Lovely shin hanga woodblock of a beautiful young woman combing her hair. She wears a blue and white cotton kimono with an embossed white design, one sleeve slipping off her shoulder to reveal her creamy white skin tinged with the palest pink touches. She has a dreamy expression, her dark eyes large and luminous, and her hair is softly arranged with loose tendrils escaping. A wonderful classic 20th century beauty print, beautifully printed with fine details. Would make a striking framed display.

Artist - 20th century artist (not translated)
Image Size - 14 1/4" x 10" + margins as shown
Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants and slight thinning on reverse at three points along top edge from previous folio mounting. Several small tears at edges in margins only, very small losses at three corners, repaired, blends well. Slight toning in margins, a few faint spots. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
